Pentax EI-200 Firmware Update Version 1.11

Before installing the new EI-200 Firmware (version 1.11), please carefully read through all the information contained below.

This document contains step-by-step instructions on how to upgrade the firmware on your PENTAX EI-200 Digital Camera. This version of the firmware will improve picture quality by increasing the accuracy of color reproduction and reducing image noise. Before updating your firmware, we recommend printing this document to use as a reference.

You may update the firmware on your EI-200 by downloading the updater file via the web, and following the instructions on this page. You can also send your camera to PENTAX CORPORATION to have your firmware updated. We will perform the update for free, but you will be responsible for any shipping costs to get your camera to us.

Cameras compatible with this update:

This software will update EI-200 cameras that have firmware versions 1.0 or 1.02 to version 1.11. To check your current firmware version, begin by turning the camera on in picture capture mode. Press the DISPLAY button to activate your LCD display. Next, press your right soft key (labeled STATUS) for current camera settings including firmware version.

Note:

We strongly recommend the use of the EI-200 A/C adapter when performing this update. Any power interruption during this procedure (approximately 4 minutes), such as battery depletion, may result in potential harm to your camera's logic board, requiring service to your camera. This service will NOT be covered under the terms of your PENTAX product warranty. Please contact Customer Service at 800-877-0155 for information on ordering an A/C adapter, or if you are unclear about any information contained in this document.

Instructions:

Download (and decompress) the firmware update file fwdc001t.fwi to your computer's hard drive.

  1. Reformat your EI-200's CompactFlash card (the Reformat command is found in the General Preferences menu when the camera is in picture capture mode), then connect the camera to the computer via the USB cable as per the instructions in your camera's manual.
  2. Transfer the update file, fwdc001t.fwi , to the root directory of your camera's CompactFlash card. The camera's CompactFlash card is represented by the Removable Disk icon that appears when you connect the camera to the computer.
  3. When the camera's orange disk access light stops blinking, the file has been fully copied to the CompactFlash card.
  4. Turn your camera off and detach it from your computer.
  5. With the A/C adapter powering the camera, open the CompactFlash slot door on your camera and turn your camera on. (The CompactFlash slot door on your camera must remain open during the installation of the firmware.)
  6. Instead of powering on normally, your orange disk access light will blink for a minute while the camera is preparing the update. When the camera is finished preparing the update, your LCD display will show a progress bar as the update runs to completion.
  7. Once the update is complete, the progress bar will disappear (i.e. the LCD screen will go blank) and the camera will restart normally.
  8. When you are done with the firmware update, reformat the CompactFlash card in the camera (the Reformat command is found in the General Preferences menu when the camera is in picture capture mode) prior to using the camera.
  9. To confirm the new version of the EI-200 firmware, turn the camera on in picture capture mode. Press the DISPLAY button to activate your LCD display. Next, press your right soft key (labeled STATUS) for current camera settings including firmware version. The new version should read 1.11 at the bottom of the display.

USB Drivers for Windows 98 for EI-200

This page will instruct you in the download and installation of your Windows 98 USB driver software for the PENTAX EI-200 Digital Still Camera. Please note, these drivers are also available on the CD-ROM originally packaged with your EI-200. However, we invite you to download and use the drivers on this page if you are no longer in possession of your original CD-ROM.

Please note, users of MacOS computers (version 8.6 or later), Windows ME, and Windows 2000 (all versions) do not require USB drivers to be provided separately. Rather, these operating systems will automatically recognize the PENTAX EI-200 and install the appropriate drivers from their own driver databases.

The Windows 98 USB drivers are provided in a single ZIP file, and must be expanded to your hard drive prior to installing them on your computer. You will need to utilize a ZIP compression utility program/expander for this purpose. When you expand the ZIP file, please do so to a temporary directory such as the following:

c:TEMP

Once the files are expanded to this directory, they are ready for installation.

Installation Instructions:

To install your Windows 98 USB driver software for your EI-200 digital camera, you need to attach the camera to your computer with the supplied USB cable (you can do this when the computer is on).

  1. Turn the function dial to PC and then turn the camera on.
  2. If this is the first time you are attaching the camera to your computer, Windows 98 should then automatically detect the camera as a new device, and ask you to install the appropriate drivers for it.
  3. A wizard will appear that will search for the drivers for your new PENTAX EI-200 device. Click NEXT.
  4. Click the radio button that says SEARCH FOR THE BEST DRIVER FOR YOUR DEVICE (RECOMMENDED). Now, click NEXT.
  5. Place a checkmark by SPECIFY A LOCATION and type C:TEMP in the location field. This will tell Windows 98 to look for the drivers in the directory to which you expanded your zip file (see above). Click NEXT.
  6. Now Windows 98 will find your EI-200 USB driver and ask you to confirm. Click NEXT.
  7. Windows 98 will then perform the installation of the driver, and notify you when the installation is complete. Click FINISH.

That's all there is to it. Now, you should be able to see your digital camera as a new disk drive under My Computer.
